Maharaji's "Contact" video

This video, titled 'Contact', a Visions International (a division of Élan Vital Inc) production, was released in 1988 and was shown during the "Contact 88 Tour." It was available for purchase from Visions International. It is based upon the Rejoice events that occurred the year earlier when Prem Rawat began to reinvigorate his moribund organisation after his years "underground". It is, as is usual in these videos, a combination of footage of his speeches or "satsangs", footage of him going to and from meetings and airports, personal testimony from some of his younger and/or more attractive devotees or "students" There is footage of him flying his personal jet, flying his helicopter and of his $125,000 glider in flight, presumably as a metaphor for the flight of his students' souls in blissful devotion to their Master. It also includes footage of him in India with Wet Dhoti Holi scenes, the nearly obligatory dancing scene and ends with a montage of Maharaji and his devotees laughing over a soundtrack of an inspirational, devotional ballad, in this case 'Need To Feel It'.

gives the impression of Maharaji flying around the world, making speeches, meeting aspirants and selecting people to "receive Knowledge" as if Elan Vital was going through a very successful period of growth. However, it had taken 6 months until March 1987 before 4,000 followers could donate $1,100,000 as a deposit on a 2nd hand Learjet 55 to replace his "inadequate" LearJet 35. Another $1,250,00 was required within 6 months and a $2,500,00 loan would still be owed. In November 1987 only 1,833 premies were participating in the National Sponsorship Program and only 6,100 had participated in Rejoice events. There were still 12,857 names and addresses on the USA mailing list but only half of them had attended a Rejoice event which basically meant the other half had left the building for good after being swept away in the Great 1983 Ashram & Satsang tsunami. The 50% drop in number of premies over 5 years sounds terrible but is small beer compared to the 7 o 8 million Indian followers Guru Maharaji Ji lost in 1974.

The Teacher/Master makes Knowledge real, tangible and alive and comprehendible(sic) to the people of his time. Once he dies, his teachings become a dead dogma, a mere doctrine, a religion. When the Teacher returns/reincarnates he restores the realization of Knowledge as a living experience for the living people.

In 1971 the young Guru Maharaj Ji explained the concept of the One Master who reincarnates throughout history whenever there is a decline in the realizarion of God. There is only ever one Master at a time and and it is the same Realized Soul.

See, reincarnation means that a realized soul, which is one at a time, comes and reveals that Truth to people. Ram, Krishna, Buddha, Kabir, Nanak, Guru Govind Singh … and also Christ - and there are many. They are all called incarnations. They come to give this Knowledge to people so that they may be done with all the sufferings of this world. Like Krishna says, "When there will be a decline in the true religion, I will come to save it and form one religion." Which he did. And "religion" means realization. "Religion" has started from a word "realization."

In 1988 he confirmed that teaching which never changes, the Teacher/Master makes Knowledge real, tangible and alive and comprehendible(sic) to the people of his time. Once he dies, his teachings become a dead dogma, a mere doctrine, a religion. When the Teacher returns/reincarnates, he restores the realization of Knowledge as a living experience for the living people.

Maharaji knows the actual situation that Elan Vital and he were in but he always says things could never be better. Is he consciously lying? all the time? he has no concern for the truth or for making conflicting statements. The premies are involved in more than one conspiracy of silence, they don't tell others that "Knowledge," for them, isn't as wonderful as Maharaji's exaggerations and falsehoods say and they never challenge the lies they're hearing him say.

  • In the Rejoices, Maharaji was able to clarify, to make sure that they, at least, understood the new techniques properly.
  • "Life that constantly strives for that betterness" there is no force or power called 'life' striving fro betterment. Living organisms do their best to stay alive and to reproduce. Maharaji is rewording the Hindu concepts of his childhood indoctrination. Call it prana, the Holy Name, Elan Vital, "the breath" or life it is still the same vitalistic concept he learnt as a boy without the religious words which his followers already memorised in the 1970s Divine Light Mission.
  • "Why do I love you? … Not because I want something from you" - Maharaji wants their 'love' because it is his sole source of income and always has been
  • "There are three elements involved here. There's you, there's me, and there's Knowledge" in a Triangle. "All sides are equal" - What a baldfaced lie
  • Most of the video are scenes from various speeches where he blusters like the ultimate cock of the walk squawking that "the Knowledge" is the best thing ever!!

Knowledge is the best thing ever, and I can say that with absolutely no doubt in my mind. It is incredible!

Last year and this year, many beautiful things have taken place. In 1987 and 1988, of course, there's been Rejoices. Rejoices have meant something very beautiful to everybody. One, there has been this chance for us to get very clarified, be very clear on how to practice Knowledge and make sure, and at least for me, it's been very good that I was able to watch everybody and make sure that they were practicing Knowledge properly or at least understood the techniques properly. After the Rejoices in the United States and Europe last year, this year in 1988, I've been to some of the countries, India, and been to Europe this year again, and I've been to Argentina, Australia, and of course there was quite a few Rejoices that were done in the United States as well. It's just been marvellous, and so many new things have started to happen, at least in the later part of 1987 and all of 1988. Something that has been so beautiful to watch has been the Knowledge sessions that have taken place and also the Aspirant meetings that have happened. Everywhere that I've gone, it's not only inspiring for me to watch, but I hope for those people who have been participating in whatever has taken place. The footage that we're about to watch is just a random selection of some of the events that have taken place in 1988, and I hope we can all enjoy them. Let's watch.

A loving farewell and off for a jaunt in the helicopter with one of the boys.

And there's all these things in this world, and they're just right. And then, most magnificent of all, there is human beings. There is life. Life that constantly strives for that betterness, for something precious that it moves, unfolds, pushes to feel good, to feel right, to feel the beauty and Knowledge can allow us to sample something that is within us.

This is very much because of a love, love that has no reason. I don't know you, but I love you. Why do I love you? Not because I have to love you. Not because I want something from you. But because you are here, I am here. You are alive, I am alive.

In April alone when I was in India we had a three day program in which the first day there were about 172,000 people and the rest of the two days there was 167,000 people.

The almost obligatory dancing scene

Maharaji could hardly dance on stage in the West as word might get out but in the East it was perfectly acceptable and these videos were tagged for PWK (People with Knowledge) or PWK & ASP (Aspirants) and were only shown to the appropriate audiences in the West. This allowed the middle aged Western premies to relive some of the excitement of their 1970s Divine Light Mission days when the were young

And the Knowledge is just so, so much focusing, the whole process is just so much focusing upon yourself, you, you, you. At first you approach it and it's like all these philosophies and everything else you've heard, and then everything is stripped away, and then you just find just yourself. There. Wise just as you are. Dumb just as you are. Stubborn just as you are. Kind just as you are and it's that fundamental, fundamental thing. Just that acceptance starts to come. And all of a sudden, it feels good.

Amongst that, don't we lose that focus. Amongst all of that, don't we somewhere along the line stop realizing that this is my life. Mine. I can't live it for anybody else. This is mine. And I have the capacity in this life to do whatever I want to do. And amongst the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of things, there is one thing that I must definitely do. And that one thing that I must do is to be in that contentment. To be in that joy. To experience that rhythm. That rhythm of this entire existence. That I cannot afford to lose that. Because once I have lost that, I have lost everything. Everything that is dear to me. Everything that is precious to me. Everything that I have held valuable.

Roger, it'll be Ventura Transition Victor 299 proceeding and we'll expect 5,005 minutes down from here.

Here we are in Buenos Aires. And people of many countries went here to see Maharaji. People of Brazil, people of Argentina, Uruguay, from where I belong, and people from Chile, Peru, Venezuela.

There are three elements involved here. There's you, there's me, and there's Knowledge. It's a triangle. And it doesn't matter which way you put it. Knowledge, you, me. Me, Knowledge, you. It's the same thing. All sides are equal. And it's the triangle. And that's what you need.

And that's what you need. Since end of December, to the last day of January, I was doing aspirant meetings. This is a chance to perhaps clarify a few things and promote our own understanding about knowledge, about what the process is, about what it involves. I've done them in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Geneva, Madrid, and Hamburg. What about zeroing in, focusing in on that thing that allows me to enjoy all the things? And that's where knowledge comes in. And I met with a lot of aspirants. And it was very beautiful, because this is all in preparation so that I can give Knowledge.

What we have to understand, that yes, there is an incredible beauty, there is an incredible joy in each one of us. And this joy, this beauty, this feeling, can be experienced, can be understood, not by the mental aspect, but by feelings.

Holi Festival. This is a festival that's not H-O-L-Y, it's H-O-L-I. It's celebrated in India. It's a colorful festival. And more or less, it's a chance for those people who have Knowledge in India and I to be together in another way.

The colourful Holi wet dhoti scene.

By 1988, Raj Vidya Kender had been able to recruit some mahatmas but only a fraction of those his brother had propagating for Manav Dharam.

I mean, you know, I know you live in Australia, down under. It is a fairly isolated place, I must agree. And you live here. There's not too many other people. I mean, 16 million people, 17 million people living in this gigantic country. It's huge, but you don't need to have seen the world to realize that knowledge is the best thing happening. It outshines it all, because it's real. It outshines it all because it touches the very basic thing in each human being, just themselves. Through all of this traveling, through all the things that I have seen, knowledge is the best thing happening. It is incredible

The video continues interpersed with scenes of premies expressing their devotion and extraordinary admiration for Maharaji. The Gold Coast Rejoice was the last time we ever had a house full of premies sleeping on the floors as we lived in the country 30 minutes drive to the Casino where the Rejoice was held. Money was still tight for many premies, some of whom had been living in the ashram only 4 or 5 years before and had been left literally penniless after 10 years living in the ashram and working for free for Guru Maharaj Ji. While I had long since stopped believing that practice of the Knowledge meditations had any positive effect on a person's life, I can attest to the truth of their adoration of Maharaji.

"Knowledge stays the same, the holy curiosity and curiosity is holy, stays the same, the desire to want to know stays the same and when that fulfillment happens in one's life the joy of that fulfillment stays the same but we change, our attitudes change, the way we look at things changes and what that Master does, amazingly enough that it takes that thing, that experience, that Knowledge and makes it real, tangible, comprehendible to the people of his time so that they may experience that as if the same thing was being experienced by any other generation and therefore Knowledge is kept alive and not thrown in the doctrine, not thrown in the dogma but is kept totally awakened, alive and separated by that teacher. When that teacher is not there it immediately firms and becomes a dogma and a doctrine. When the teacher comes back he takes it back out of dogma and doctrine and makes it a living experience for the living people and that's what it's all about." (Heartfelt, awed applause)

Young Aussie Bloke: Well, there's not a word to describe it, really. It feels great, it feels incredible, it feels beautiful.

Classy Australian Female: It's the basis of my whole life. It's my anchor, the bottom line.

Once Were Warriors: Great, eh? I mean, everybody should come along to this thing, eh? It's something that should be looked at and come along to it. It's really worth it, because, you know, it's the real thing, eh?

Asian Woman: Oh, for me, it's wonderful. Yeah, I know how lucky I am.

Kiwi Woman: It just fills me up, just overflowing with life, with that feeling of it's terrific to be alive.

"Just love the guy. Just love him."

"He's the greatest thing I've ever seen."

"To me, Maharaji is the Giver of the Gift."

Nearly all Élan Vital videos produced for public consumption finish with a montage of he and his devotees laughing over a soundtrack of an inspirational, devotional ballad, in this case "I Need To Feel It, I Need To Feel It, I Need To Feel It, I Need To Feel It" …

I Need To Feel It

Kim O'Leary with Prem Rawat in Contact videoContemplation, I've been thinking tonight
About my life and I need to feel it
I need to feel it
Just need to feel it
I need to feel it

Life carries on
I need to go where it goes
I need to see what it shows
And I need to feel it
Just need to feel it
I need to feel it

Kim O'Leary with Prem Rawat in Contact video Hidden in my boredom
He calls me up
Shows me what it's all about
And I need to feel it
I need to feel it
Just need to feel it

Things may come and things may go
I'm here to be enough
And I need to feel it
Just need to feel it
I need to feel it
