Maharaji: Interacting with Aspirants, June 2008

Prem Rawat aka Maharaji 2008 By Maharaj's standards this speech begins low-key annd light-hearted. The subject matter is basically the same as in all his speeches but here, he responds reassuringly to some questions or 'expressions' from 3 aspirants too young to "receive Knowledge." Then after a question from an older woman from Barcelona he begins to gather steam.

  • His ideas about religion and prayer, could hardly be shallower. He sneers at prayer as if it is nothing but begging. and a hellfire judging God. He has forgotten to whom you should pray and what he has taught about begging
  • He role-plays vignettes of imaginary conversations using stupid and nasty voices and the worst, sleaziest dialogue. I have never heard him say a good thing about people in "the world."
  • He often uses examples of 'unconscious' people expressing bizarre love of their cars. He is the one obsessed with cars and he unconsciously shows this by using such exaples so often
  • A typical example is his talking about other peoples' ideas of 'peace': I smile at you, you smile at me. I give you a flower. You give me a flower. We all give 'V' signs and move in slow motion
  • Knowledge is not there to remove hardships but it is an umbrella to shelter you
  • Ram says the human body is the vessel to cross the ocean of life, the breath is what powers the vessel but you need a Master who's got strong arms to row you across.
  • The three pillars: satsang, service and meditation, listening, participating, practising are absolutely necessary and have been since time immemorial
  • Being in a quiet environment is not the same thing as being peaceful. "Peace and quiet" is not real peace. Turmoil can roil in our minds, peace in our hearts
  • Lot of people received Knowledge when they were quite young and then they left, why did they he stop practising? Human nature. That's why it's so important to listen to the Master. Actually they left because the promise of "Knowlege" and the reality are completely different

(Standing applause) Okay, so what I would like to do now is to speak with the aspirants but I know that aspirants tend to be sometimes very shy. Um, and I know you're going through the Keys and if there is any way that I can help you, if you have any questions to make your journey smoother then this is a good opportunity to do that. So any aspirants who would like to talk to me? (giggles) I know the Keys are good, but … (loud laughter) yes.

Translator: She heard about you for the first time on a radio, much resort to you for the first time on a radio conception. And this was a few years ago. And this is the first chanced she's had to see you in person. She loves her participating and and she loves you..

Well, enjoy. Enjoy the journey of, of being an aspirant. Everybody who has-who's sitting in this room has been an aspirant at one time or the other uh including me, you know, for me, there are times when I'm really tired and you're just sitting in some place and you're going, you know, why am I doing this? Here I am. I'm really tired. I still have more to go, I still gotta go places and all of that stuff and then you remember just you remind yourself, what it's about, that you can change a person's life, that you can bring them peace, that you can bring them joy. And at that point it's like okay, okay, go on. Sometimes you forget and we receive Knowledge, we have our problems, we have our hardships.

You know, Knowledge is not there to remove hardships, that's not what Knowledge does, Knowledge is an umbrella and I give this example quite a bit. You're not trying to control the rain, it is going to rain, it is definitely going to rain but when it rains, you don't have to get wet. You can open the umbrella and that's what Knowledge is but sometimes, we, we, in the rush to receive Knowledge forget the preciousness of aspiring, of the thirst and thirst is really important. Thirst is really, really important. So to remember how important it is for you at this time as an aspirant, to keep that thirst alive, to try to understand, to move forward and then one day you will have Knowledge. Like I was saying, problems will come and sometimes people forget. Sometimes people forget. A person just recently, just uh in one of the events and he had received Knowledge and he stopped practising. You know, and there are people here, I am sure will go, how could that be if you find such a wonderful thing. How can you stop?

Maharaji with Aspirants 2008
Maharaji with Aspirants 2008

Human nature, human nature. We see something, we like something, maybe the first day it's like wow I have this everything, 2nd day a little bit less, 3rd day a little bit less, 4th day a little bit less. Human nature, human nature that we forget and when we forget, we lose the importance. So yeah when you received Knowledge, you have a beautiful time, everything is there and then people forget. Okay, I've got more important things in my life. This is what's happening in my life and people go off and this person had come back. You know, one of the things about Knowledge is the doors are open but it works both ways. The door is open for people to come in but also because the doors are open, people who have Knowledge also leave and I have patience. People leave, people do what they do, (applause) you know, then and then a lot of people and I think this is something that is starting to happen.

Lot of people received Knowledge when they were quite young and then they left. The utopia. They chased their utopia. They chased their world. The world that was going to give them everything and I think as they have aged and matured and found no utopia and found that this world really didn't have a whole lot to offer they look at Knowledge and they go "Well at least that was offering me something, that was worth more and so a lot of people are starting to come back to Knowledge. Fine. Fine. Come. Enjoy. I'm not going to judge you. I'm not here for that. You went, you left, whatever reason you left for you have come back for whatever reason you have come back for fine. But try to remember what is important and as an aspirant in your life remember that, remember what is important always. All the other things that are not important, you will remember easily and the things that are important, you'll forget easily. That's why there is such an importance in listening to the Master. Having that relationship with the Master because the Master will remind you again and again and again of what is important.

The idea of the three pillars the idea of listening, participating, practising. This is not something that I made up. You know this goes back before Christ. This has been talked about this is was considered essential a long long long time ago. Three things, three elements and of course the foundation on which these three pillars stand. So this has been around for a really long time. I'm just reiterating it because, you know, here we are and we forget that we're just human beings. "Oh no no but we are so technologically advanced. Look what we have. We have aeroplanes that can fly really fast. We have communication. We can we can see people across the world, we have, you know, high broadband Internet connections, we have computers, we have cell phones we have-excuse me, the first idiot who came up with the chariot thought exactly the same thing. "And we have a chariot and we have mastered the horses." It's like that every time, you know, what will what will happen 2000 years from now, and what will happen 2000, there will be different kind of technologies and people will look at this and go "They were archaic."

So this is always happening. What are you proud of? You haven't changed. You're still a human being. You still feel. Yes, there is. You know now new telephones and high speed Internet. Then you can surf the web on the go but that doesn't mean that eases the pain. No. That doesn't mean that eases the suffering. No. The vulnerability is that you have always had are still always going to be there. This is who you are. You know they can be all the things in the world and then all of a sudden one person allergic to a bee gets stung by one little bee and he's dead. The vulnerabilities are all the same. Nothing essentially changes. There is an illusion of change but nothing really changes. And so, so important to remember. So important to remember what this heart is and coming from that feeling go forward and enjoy. Enjoy being an aspirant, anyone else. Yes, back there

Maharaji with Aspirants 2008

Hola Hola. My name is Daniel Daniels and I'm 17 years old -- said a lot, difficult to understand -- and I want to say thank you for everything. Thanks a lot. (surprisingly vigorous applause)

Continue with the Keys and enjoy. It looks like to me, you're halfway already there. Um, but enjoy. And one day you will have Knowledge if you so want, because it's a very, it's a very simple thing now. You know, they they they go through the Keys, and if you have understood the Keys, good. fine. I have been receiving email from people and it's some of the most beautiful email, people just saying, "You know, I have finished the Keys. And it was a beautiful journey. And can I please have the gift of Knowledge." And it's just, it's just very, very beautiful to just see that So I just hope that someday you will have Knowledge , but continue to enjoy.

I want to tell you. Thank you for coming to Los Alamos And that what you've done is amazing. Because you've helped me a lot. And when I'm 18, I still have a long time to go, I'd like to receive Knowledge . For now just watching the Keys and thank you very much.

Enjoy your youth. Enjoy the age you are. Enjoy the Keys. It's all possible. You know, in life, so many young people. They wait till they can get old enough so they can have a driver's licence, so that they can drive a car, so then they can do this and they can do that. Enjoy. Just enjoy who you are, where you are, what's happening in your life. Everything is magical. It's beautiful and if you can find that ageless in you and recognise that ageless in you, then you will never grow old. Even though the body will, you will not so, enjoy, enjoy the Keys. Up there. Man, that's really high. You're all very high up there. (laughter) Almost need binoculars to see. Okay, somebody. Somebody wanted to talk to me aspirant from up there. Is there a microphone up there or not? Sending one up there now. Here comes Hercules is running up here. We needed Superman. You should have dispatched Superman. It's Florida. Or Wonder Woman. There's a microphone coming. He's running. He's gonna be out of breath. I think he's gone to the restaurant. There he is. Right. That's in record time.

Afternoon Maharaji, my name is Lolly. When I saw you in at the Centre in Barcelona and when I started watching videos I asked myself "What is this man saying?" and at the end I started watching more and more videos and I felt very good and a few days after that I stopped judging people. I was walking along the street and feeling atpeace. I felt at peace with everyone but sometimes after I changed things I broke the connection with what you were talking about in your video so my question, Maharaji, when I feel most pain in my heart, when I feel everything is breaking to pieces how can I feel Peace. Thank you very much

Maharaji with Aspirants 2008

You know there is an idea of what peace is and then there is the real peace. And the two are not alike. They're very different. There is an idea of peace. Idea of peace might be that I smile at you. You smile back at me. You know I give you a flower. You give me a flower for going and you know when we walk, it's all in slow motion. It's just like very slowly. This is just concepts of peace. I'm going to give you an example. Of course this comes from India But don't take it from India. It's about human beings. Krishna is trying or is talking to Arjun in the middle of the battlefield. They're talking about peace. And Krishna is saying to Arjun. Do what you have to do. Fight. But remember me. How appropriate to be talking about peace in the middle of a battlefield because this does not fit the concept of peace. In the concept of peace, you know, everybody is ??? Everybody smiles at everybody and everything happens in slow motion. Everything is fine and everybody's going to heaven and everything is great.

Maharaji with Aspirants 2008
Maharaji with Aspirants 2008

But real peace is different. Real peace does not emanate here. (points at head) Real peace emanates here. (hands over heart) People have been trying to make the world peace which emanates from this. (points at head) This has told the world what the world peace should be like. The peace that comes from here (hands over heart) is the real peace. It is not bound by concepts. It's not bound by ideas. It's not bound by slow motions and smiles and flowers and V signs. That is something else. That a person in the greatest of turmoil can still experience peace. Why? Because the turmoil happens here (points at head) and peace resides here. (hands over heart) There's a difference. There's a difference. So when you heard me, something inside of you, there's excitement, there's a joy. You listen. Fine. It is not just listening. You can listen. That's okay. But then there is the gift of Knowledge as well. And then listen but listen carefully. When I say you must pay attention because you cannot hear my words and turn them to what suits you. I'm not a book. I am still alive. (applause) I am living and my words do not need interpretation by someone or by you. So don't interpret what I am saying. Listen to what I am saying.

You will be pleased to know I don't say that much. I use the same thread and sometimes I weave a carpet and you use the same threads and sometimes a weave a shirt. I use the same threads and sometimes I weave a painting and I use the same threads and sometimes I weave a blanket. It's the same thread. The core of what I say is not all that different. The expressions may come out differently. But what is being talked about is the same thing. And what I say to you is not from my ideas but I try to say what I have to say to you from my heart and if you listen to it from any other way than through your heart, it will not make sense. So listen. Listen to your heart. Your heart will not tell you to buy a blue car or a green car or a red car. Heart does not tell you to fall in love with this girl or that girl or this thing or that thing. That's this. You know, this, this is the one thing that creates the want. I ne-e-e-d to have this. I need to have this. I need to have this. I'm not saying that's right or wrong. Fine. Not a problem. You want 10 pair of shoes? No problem. You want 20 pairs of shoes, no problem. I'm not passing that judgement.

What I'm saying to you is this, know the difference between this and this. This can take lust, lust and turn it into love. And then two days later no more love and no more lust. (laughter) I'm not wrong. Look at the statistics for divorce. These are the same two people who walked into the church and seemingly in front of God said I love you and even before that they said I love you, I love you many, many more times. How can I live without you. Wait a little while. (laughter)? You will be. What a joke. But that's what this thing does. This is what this thing does.

Maharaji with Aspirants 2008

The world fiasco created by compliments of some-every religion. Look at this, every religion has a heaven and has a hell and if you do something wrong, you will go to hell. right? And is this what the Master of the time is teaching? No. Master of the time was teaching that the Kingdom of Heaven is within here, that you can be fulfilled. Every single time. But then the game begins. So listen, but listen from your heart. Understand and understand from your heart. Know the distinctions. Just know the distinctions. Know the distinctions. Know, just know, not believe, but no. No questions. No. Be clear. Be clear in it. Then! Then! Will it rain? Yes. And will it rain hard? Yes. And sometimes will it rain for a long time? Yes. But the good news is you don't have to get wet. (scattered applause) Now, is your problem, is your problem with the rain? Rain. Because nature doesn't have problem with rain. It's a good thing. You do. And what is your problem with the rain? Getting wet. So hold in your hand with certainty, not with doubt, with certainty, the umbrella of Knowledge and whenever you want, whenever you feel that it is starting to rain, feel free. Free! Yeah. Open that umbrella and stand and let it rain. Let it rain. Let it rain for as long as it wants to rain and you don't have to get wet.

This is how it works. This is how it works. I'm not here talking to you hypothetically. See this is amazing what Knowledge is what I am talking about is amazing. I am talking about something that will be there, can be there for you, till your very last breath. That's the relationship I'm talking about. There's nothing in this world that makes that claim and Knowledge has been there for people till their very last breath again and again and again and again. Leaving this world. Not in fear. But in peace. Last words. Gratitude. Gratitude. Thank you. This is not easy, my friend. In this world, this is not easy. But this is what I'm talking about. It's Knowledge till the last breath. This is no religion. No. Till the last breath. Till the last one. No tests. No tests. No tests. Simple. Beautiful.

Somebody once asked me. Says, what do you think about the story of, you know, Abraham? He is being asked to kill his son. Will he do it or not? I said well, "If God is all knowing he probably knew whether he's going to do it or not." So it doesn't make sense. So maybe God wasn't all knowing. So he wanted to test him. Or was he all knowing? Because if he was all knowing, why did he need to test him cause he were already knew he'd do it. Or maybe he had a doubt in his all knowingness. I know. But! The one that resides is your heart today is not testing you. The one that resides in your heart, in the temple of your existence, of your heart, you're not being tested. Every day, through incredible kindness and incredible blessing a breath comes into you. Is that a test? No. A blessing. A blessing. Now how incredible, how beautiful is that? Here people go "Yes. God is going to test us. Why? Doesn't the God know? You're going to fail. You're going to pass. Yet people go, "Yes, of course he knows but! People. Let's pray to God. What? What are you doing? Hey, God. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey"

The one that doesn't go. The one that doesn't come. The one that is neither above nor below, but everywhere. The one that is in your heart, does not know your need? Of course. Of course, knows your need. Which one? Which need? The one you think you need. That's what you pray for. Oh, uh, God I saw this girl. She was really pretty and you know, if you can just send her my way, ha, I'll be so thankful." Or it could be the other way. "You know, God, I met this boy is really cute. And can you? I mean, you know, and you're waiting, waiting. God, you know what's wrong and why don't you and da da da dada" this is what people pray to. This is what people pray for. And they think God is just sitting there going "Am I right? okay. Prayer number 42, prayer number 46, 47, 28, 28. It's like a restaurant order, you know, this is what they have boiled God down to, a restaurant owner.

Maharaji with Aspirants 2008
Maharaji with Aspirants 2008

What is the prayer of the heart? The real prayer. What does it mean? You know. Yes. You have always said a prayer, has been one and has never changed. And that Creator, that power, will do anything in its power to make it come true. The most divine of the miracle takes place that it is a breath that comes into you. The possibility of being fulfilled. The possibility of being in peace ,the possibility of being content. And where did he place this peace? On a temple on a mountain, too far. Here. Wherever you go with you all the time. Wherever you go. Not like a piece of luggage that you might forget. Wherever you go. Whatever you do. Always. All you need. So look inside. All there. All there. That one prayer that you have been praying for has been answered. You're alive. The possibility of being fulfilled has presented itself. Your prayer has been answered. But do you know? Do you know? Do you know that your prayer has been answered. Do you know? Because if you don't, let me tell you, it has been answered. (applause) It has been answered. Absolutely! Absolutely! Perfectly, beautifully. It has been answered. And awaken to that.. Accept that. Rejoice! That the prayer was heard.

Then people go "Oh, oh but God doesn't hear my prayers." I mean, what, most people are confused about Santa Claus and God. What do people pray for? "Oh, God, you know, tomorrow they're going to review my file. Can I please have that promotion? Oh, God, I don't want anything else. I have never wanted anything from you. I have never asked you for anything. Can I please have that promotion?" If you have the power to pray. Do you have the power to accept the decision? (Screams) Not today you don't get promoted. Then people are like, "no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. What kind of a cruel god is that?" You know, I think people are nicer to police officers than they are to God. Because I have actually seen a police officer write a ticket and they go after the police officer writes the ticket for speeding, hands it to them, they actually go. "Thank you." You know, and I say to people said, "Why did you thank that person? He just gave you a ticket and you you thanked him for the ticket." God, no, they won't thank God. God gives you this life. God gives you this breath. No, no, no. Thanks. Yeah, because they don't mean anything to you. And up to what point do they mean nothing to you? Up till the time you lose it, then it means everything.

That's wissdom? That's wisdom? That's wisdom? I don't think so. That's like a guy and he smashes his car into a truck and with the last little bit of energy that he has, he finally puts on his seat belt. Wrong idea. Wrong idea! You know, uh wrong idea. I mean, now that you've smashed your car into the truck, why put on the seat belt? At least the paramedics will have a easier time. You know, taking your body out of there. But the last little strength left is like, ??? this is what people do. This is what people do in life. No, look at the reality. Reality is simple. Reality is beautiful.

Maharaji with Aspirants 2008

This is what Ram says, said this vessel. This this is the vessel to go across this ocean and my coming, coming and going of this breath is my blessing. What you need is a Master who's got strong arms to row you across. (applause) Again, you know, fact that it comes from India is pointless here. Take it for what it's worth. This is the vessel, coming and going is the breath, is my blessing and you need a Master with got strong arms who can row this vessel across. Sounds like an easy formula to me.

You know people bang their heads against the wall trying to figure that one out. What am I doing here? How is it going to happen? What is this? What is here? Here it is. Do you see this as the vessel that will take you across? Or do you see this as a party machine? What is happening in this world? People look at a car. "How do you like it? Oh I love this. What? You love this car? You love like your wife. You love this car. Because if you love this car like your wife, I'm not getting in it. God knows what's been happening in this. (laughter) And if you love your wife like you love this car, I feel sorry for your wife." No, no. You like, not love. People don't understand what love is. People don't understand what love is.

When people go to a place that's very quiet, quiet. What do they say? "Oh, it's so peaceful." No, no, no, no. It's quiet, not peace. I was laughing one day, I heard this commercial, you know. And they have these headphones and this company was advertising their headphones. And they're electric and you put them on, you turn on the switch and it's got noise cancellation, face cancelling headphones. And the guy puts them on, turns them on and goes "Oh they're so peaceful." They're quiet not peaceful. People don't know the difference between quiet and peaceful because it can be quiet and a storm could be brewing inside. And that's no peace. That's no peace. So it becomes so important to have that viewpoint from that place, from that perspective. No, don't get it confused. Don't get it confused. There's no reason to get confused

Bonjour … I'd like to always be like this little sunflower that turns towards the sun. Thank you. Thank you very much

Enjoy. Enjoy your journey and I'm glad you're going through the Keys and just enjoy them. You know, there's a lot in there. And if you ever get bored, rewind. There's a lot in there. There's a lot there. And just, you know, you will have Knowledge very soon now because you're almost 15. So it's like, almost 16. It's like, almost 17 Almost 18 and you're ready. It will happen. It will happen soon. But I hope that the most important thing of the whole journey is that you start recognising the value and the importance of each day. Not starting to look for a target like over there. That's my target. I wish I was 18. I wish I was 19. But every day and I, from what you tell me, you're already doing that. So that's wonderful. Enjoy. Enjoy this. Thank you. (Standing applause)
